Speaking at the occasion of Australian telecoms firm Telstra’s annual investment day, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer stated that the company would soon release its Windows Mobile 6.5 platform.
Ballmer said in a statement, “With releases we'll make this year - releases we'll make with 6.5 next year, Windows Mobile 7, I think we have a pretty interesting roadmap.”
There has been an intense speculation about Microsoft launching a new Windows Mobile platform in light of comments made by Motorola’s CEO Sanjay Jha, during company’s quarterly conference call last week, when he discussed about the launch of Windows Mobile 6.5 somewhere in the second half of the next year.
The recent announcement from Ballmer has further delayed the launch Windows Mobile 7, which is until now touted as the next version of Windows Mobile software, for an unknown period, as the company will update its existing Windows Mobile 6.1 version with Mobile 6.5.
Meanwhile, Ballmer also did not seem to consider Google’s Android platform as a sound competitor to Windows Mobile, saying that the mobile platform from the search giant lacks a well-devised revenue model.
“Google doesn't exactly bubble to the top of the list of the top competitors we've got going in mobile. They might some day”, Ballmer said.
