The Republican US presidential candidate John McCain has alleged YouTube of responding too hastily to the copyright violation notices served on them and removing his campaign videos from its site.
In a three-page letter sent to YouTube’s parent company Google, McCain has urged the company to take a full legal review of the takedown notices on his videos sent by the accounts controlled by other political candidates and campaigns.
While McCain campaign videos use footages from news broadcasts, the campaign purported that the videos so created are well in line with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) norms, as these are used entirely for non-commercial purposes.
However YouTube’s general counsel, Zahavah Levine rejected the McCain campaign’s plea by saying that her site wouldn’t favour any category of content over the other, and it would treat all its users at the same level, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
Earlier, in order to comply with the DMCA norms, YouTube had removed McCain campaign videos after receiving takedown notices from the original content owners.
